Step 10: The Final Frontier
In Step 10, the final frontier in achieving and maintaining a healthier school canteen, will go through:
- The Ready, Set, Choose Action list and how to use it
- Where to get support
- How to connect the canteen’s activities with the school curriculum and
- Maintaining healthy canteen changes
Ready, Set, Choose
The Ready, Set, Choose tool is a simple checklist to check your canteen menu against the food and drink criteria. It includes actions to help schools transition the canteen to being healthy before submitting for a Menu Check.

NSW Healthy School Canteen Menu Check Service
The NSW School Canteen Menu Check Service provides primary and secondary public and non-government schools with a voluntary menu check. Schools opting to have their canteen menu reviewed against the Food and Drink Criteria will receive suggestions on working towards a healthier canteen. Use the application form to submit your canteen information to the Menu Check Service.

Maintaining a successful, healthy canteen can be made easier by reading out for support and advice. Whether you're in the early stages of making changes or have already achieved a healthier canteen, help is always available.
From the school community
We all have the same vision for supporting children's health and Principals, teachers, and parents can all play an important role. Organise to meet with the Principal, teachers and parents/P&C to let them know what you are doing to move towards a healthier school canteen. Ask for their involvement, support, ideas and help and this will ensure they can support you along the way.
Healthy Kids Association
Contact the Healthy Kids Association support line for advice on (02) 9876 1300 or 1300 724 850 if you are calling from outside of Sydney.
The canteen can be a powerful place to help reinforce the lessons children are learning as part of the school curriculum. When students are learning about nutrition, health and food, one of the best ways to relate and apply this knowledge is to see it in action in the school canteen. See Step 6 for more information.
Progress and success – keeping up the momentum
As you continue to implement the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, it is a good idea to keep track of actions and changes you make as well as the impact they have. This also helps to plan further actions required to meet the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy by the end of 2019. Tracking actions and outcomes in a canteen log notebook can be a great method to keep organised so that you can look back to see what worked and what didn’t work.
With all the great work put into aligning your canteen with the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, your progress and success deserve to be rewarded with recognition. Let the school and wider community know about the positive changes that have been made through school newsletters and social media. The local media may also be interested in running your success stories.
Attending canteen network meetings is also a good opportunity to link up with other canteen staff and exchange experiences and tips. If there is a Facebook group for your local canteen network or through the Healthy Kids Association website, share your story to inspire others. You can talk about the impact the healthier changes have had on students, and any feedback you have received from parents, teachers, and the principal.
