Step 4: Marketing a healthy canteen

Good marketing can ensure the financial sustainability and health success of your school canteen. The overall goal is to make Everyday food and drinks stand out and sell well.

You can do this by addressing the 4Ps of marketing:

  1. Product.
  2. Place.
  3. Price.
  4. Promotion.

Marketing is getting the right product in the right place, favourably priced using the right promotion to help attract customers who will buy.

A healthy canteen uses marketing to attract customers to healthier, Everyday food.

Product

Ensure at least ¾ of items are Everyday food and drinks.

Place

Display Everyday food at the front of displays at eye level in fridges, on shelves or on the countertop. Only Everyday items should be sold at the point of sale – next to cash registers or where money is exchanged.

Price favourably

Include only Everyday items in meal deals or specials.

Promotion

Promote Everyday food and drinks in advertising and via commercial branding on signage and displays.
